‘Eurovision Song Contest’ and ‘Borat’ Advance in Oscar Shortlist

The “Borat” sequel from the Will Ferrell comedy about the European competition and “Wuhan Flu” from “Husavik” advanced along with 13 other tunes in the original song category. Some 92 songs, including “Just Sing” from “Trolls World Tour”, did not make the cut.

Members of various branches will vote on March 5-9 to determine the final five candidates. The Oscar nominations will be announced on March 15.

In the documentary feature category, 238 films were down from 15 in the controversy. Favorites still include Netflix’s “Dick Johnson Is Dead” “Crip Camp” and “My Octopus Teacher”. Also in contention are Amazon’s “All in: The Fight for Democracy” and “MLK / FBI”. Neither Netflix’s popular “The Social Dilemma” nor Brian Fogel’s “The Dissident” made a list of Jamal Khashogi’s assassination.

In the international feature category, 93 countries produced films, the highest ever, but now only 15. “Another Round” from Denmark, is an early favorite and compressed list created. Director Thomas Winterberg stars Mads Mikkelsen as a high school teacher in the midst of a midlife crisis. It is also the “Charlatan” of popular Polish director Agnieszka Holland, which was presented by the Czech Republic.

Voters from all branches of the academy are eligible to vote in the international facility category, but to do so it is necessary to meet the minimum viewing requirement.
