[With a D.I.Y. sound] There was not much, “Oh, I have mastered my instrument and I have to sit there and learn how to play quadruple contrasts for six hours.” It was not until a few years later, about which we have spoken openly, that we [Ulrich and the guitarist Kirk Hammett] It was like, “Maybe we should improve our skills.” I started taking drum lessons after we had already made our first record. Cancer started taking lessons.
Being in a band [might] Be more like filmmaking because filmmaking is a collective effort. We’re in a garage band, but at some point, if you really want to do it for real, you have to be disciplined – if nothing else, it’s out of respect for everyone that you’re with that team Huh .
SCOTT The films are collaborative, yes, but they are a one-shot thing. The idea of filmmaking, being practiced for at least the last 50 or 70 years, is there is a guy whose vision is about it and everyone else is serving it.
ULRICH [With a band] You have to learn from what you have done, not good things and good things. We’re in the mid-50s, and we’re in the midst of making a new record right now. We are a much better songwriter than 30 years ago, but with understanding the craft, you are weighed with choices.
So many times when we do interviews, people ask, “In 1987, you said that. When it happened in ’95, why did you do it? What did you mean? “It’s 25 years later, I can’t tell you because my version changes over time. I can’t hear the record about us without thinking that when we were recording it, So what did the studio look like, what was the drive in the studio every day.
But sometimes it’s fun to throw back things you can appreciate. Choose something random, [Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood”]: You’re watching this movie and it’s incredible, and you go, “Well, what was he doing three hours after that? Did he rewrite the scene the next day? Did something like that happen that day Who told him something different [Leonardo] DiCaprio about this character? “That’s what I was talking about earlier in people going into prime places that really turn you on.
