Afghan War Casualty Report: April 2021

The following report is a compilation of all significant security incidents confirmed by New York Times reporters throughout Afghanistan for the entire month. This is necessarily incomplete as many local authorities refuse to confirm incidental information. The report includes government claims of insurgent casualties, but in most cases these cannot be independently verified by the Times. Likewise, the report does not include the Taliban’s claims for their attacks on the government until they can be verified. Both sides regularly increase casualties for their opponents.

Last week, at least 64 pro-government and 17 civilians died in Afghanistan. The deadliest attack occurred in Helmand province, where the Taliban attacked a military base called Waziromanda near the provincial capital Lashkar Gah, killing 10 soldiers and taking 12 other prisoners. The rebels captured the base and confiscated all weapons and equipment. In another incident in Helmand, a car bomb targeted a police checkpoint in Nava district, killing eight soldiers and injuring 12 others. In Baghlan province, a military convoy was attacked by the Taliban in the Hajda Kotal area of Dahna-e-Ghori district, killing five soldiers and injuring four others.
