New year resolution starter pack
New year resolutions can be difficult to keep. Most people abandon by February, studies show. So here is some advice if you are determined to set and accomplish a goal in 2021.
Make it specific and realistic. Our colleague Tara Parker-Pope says, “Resolutions are very large without any consideration whether they are practical or possible.” Resolving to “exercise more” is unclear, but the solution to add five or 10 minutes to each workout is mediocre.
If you find yourself regaining a goal over the years, consider why this stick did not happen. Tara said, ‘Sankalp’ I am going to lose weight ‘does not address the underlying issue of why your diet is not as healthy as you want it to be. “Maybe the resolution should be: ‘I’m going to stop buying packaged snack foods and snack on fruits and vegetables instead.”
Go easy on yourself. If the idea of setting ambitious resolutions seems overwhelming, it turns them into smaller but still satisfying goals. “It is still important to celebrate that you are working towards making a positive change,” the Times writes Christina caron.
Consider turning positive change into a long-term habit from 2020 onwards. The epidemic will still take shape by 2021. But even after it is over, you may want to build on the new habits you’ve developed, whether it’s cooking healthy meals or giving more time to self-care. “All those things were front and center during the epidemic,” says Tara. “We should keep them in the afterlife of the epidemic.”
